Join us for the book launch of Clemson University Historian, Dr. Otis Pickett Sr.'s first book, Southern Shepherds, Savage Wolves! Thursday, November 6th in Holtzendorff Hall Auditorium.
Southern Shepherds, Savage Wolves: Presbyterian Domestic Missionaries and Race in South Carolina, 1802-1874, written by Clemson Historian, Dr. Otis W. Pickett, Sr. will be released in October of 2025.
Southern Shepherds, Savage Wolves explores how nineteenth-century Presbyterian missionaries—specifically John Lafayette Girardeau and T. C. Stuart—navigated the complexities of racial integration, enslavement, and ecclesiastical rights. While their efforts to integrate enslaved and later freed individuals into the church were nuanced and layered, the book critically examines the inherent contradictions between theology and the institution of slavery in the American South.
